Roofers Weybridge
One of Surrey's Most Distinctive Building Histories
My name's John Quilligan. Roofing has been in my family for three generations, and Weybridge, particularly the St George's Hill estate, has one of the more unusual property histories on our entire patch.
When builder W.G. Tarrant developed the estate from 1911 onward, the original houses were built with a distinctive character, leaded light windows, half tile-hung elevations, and Tudor-style detailing across a lot of properties. Some of those original Tarrant houses still stand today.
A lot don't. Over the following century, a significant number of the estate's original properties have been demolished and replaced with entirely new luxury builds, often in a completely different architectural style, Georgian or Queen Anne influences in red brick or white render rather than the Arts and Crafts tile-hanging of the original 1911 houses. This means two neighbouring properties on the same road can be a century apart in construction, needing completely different approaches.

What Customers Say About First Rate Roofing
Original Tile-Hanging Needs a Genuine Period Approach
An original Tarrant house from St George's Hill's early years is a different job entirely to a repair on a standard modern roof. The half tile-hung elevations that characterised many of these properties, tiles fixed to the wall in overlapping rows rather than laid flat as a roof covering, is a specialist technique that most general roofers rarely encounter, similar in principle to the fishscale tile hanging found on period buildings elsewhere in Surrey.
Matching materials on a property like this means understanding the original construction, not applying a standard modern repair method to something built over a century ago. Getting it wrong doesn't just look inconsistent, it can compromise how the wall or roof section actually sheds water, since these techniques were developed specifically to work together as a system.
We identify whether a property is one of the surviving original builds before recommending any approach, since treating it like a standard 20th-century roof is exactly the kind of mismatch that causes real problems down the line.
How To Book Our Roofing Services
New Builds Need a Completely Different Conversation
Where an original property has been replaced with a modern luxury build, the roofing considerations flip entirely.
These are contemporary constructions, often with premium modern materials, sometimes still within a builder's original warranty period if recently completed, and the priority shifts from period matching to making sure any repair or maintenance work meets the same high specification the rest of the build was constructed to.
We ask directly whether a property is an original build or a more recent replacement before quoting, since the two situations call for genuinely different materials, different expertise, and in some cases, different conversations about who's actually responsible for the work if a new-build warranty is still active.

Roofing Questions We Get Asked in Weybridge
How do I know if my property is an original Tarrant house or a later rebuild? Original properties often still show the distinctive tile-hung elevations and leaded windows from the early 1900s development, though many have been altered over the decades. We identify the actual construction during the free inspection rather than assume based on the estate's general reputation.
Can you actually repair original tile hanging, or does it need replacing entirely? Often it can be repaired, though it depends on the extent of the damage and whether matching materials are available. We'll explain the genuine options during the inspection rather than default to full replacement.
My property is a recent rebuild. Is it still under a builder's warranty? Possibly, if it was completed relatively recently. Worth checking before booking independent work, since some issues may be covered directly by the original builder. We'll advise honestly if this looks like it applies to your property.
How quickly can you get someone out? Same day in most cases, seven days a week.
Do you charge for the inspection? No. No call-out fee, ever, regardless of what the inspection finds.
